MMTWiki:Getting started
Contents |
Introduction
A wiki is a tool for collaborative writing -- so feel free to jump right in! A quick registration and email confirmation is all that is required to login and start editing. Please do also subscribe to the email discussion list, mmtwiki-l.
Different editors may participate in different ways depending on their interest and knowledge. In addition to contributing original content, some of the things MMT Wiki editors may choose to do are: make corrections, add source links, edit wiki markup, edit content for clarity and style, organize page content and wiki pages or contribute non-MMT wiki content (for example, editing/writing infrastructure pages like this one and the help pages).
For information on other ways to help, in addition to editing the Wiki, please see the Volunteer webpage.
If you have questions about any of the content of this or any other page, please say so. The main communication tool is the discussion email list, mmtwiki-l. The Communication section below has more info on mmtwiki-l and other communication tools.
Editing basics
- MMT Wiki style guide: For page organization, subtopic headings and reference syntax, see MMTWiki:Style guide.
- FAQ for Editors: For wiki questions specific to editing MMT Wiki, please see the link on the side bar. If your question is not answered on the FAQ, please add it to the list (even if you don't yet have an answer).
- Introduction to wiki editing: From the MediaWiki Public Domain Help pages ported to MMT Wiki, see Help:Editing pages, Help:Starting a new page and Help:Formatting for a general introduction to editing wiki pages.
- The edit tool bar: MediaWiki uses a version of the simple markup language called wikitext. The standard MediaWiki edit tool bar has been upgraded (as of 5/14/11) with features from the Wikipedia Usability Initiative. For editors who prefer to use the WYSIWYG FCKeditor, please email admin to implement that option for you.
- Recent changes: The link in the sidebar shows a list of pages recently added or edited.
- Good advice from Wikipedia: Be Bold!
Communication
- The main communication tool for the MMT Wiki project is the email discussion list, mmtwiki-l, with open subscription and a public archives (at the link).
- Individual talk pages are associated with most wiki pages, including user pages, and are accessed via the "discussion" tab at the top of the page. They provide a place for editors to discuss issues related to the content of the page and to describe their edits. To facilitate talk page discussions, sign and date your talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~) or click the signature button on the editor tool bar. Talk pages are, to my knowledge, the only place where editors sign their edits. See Help:Using talk pages for an introduction to using talk pages.
- MMT Questions is a public forum for MMT related questions and discussions. Anyone can ask or answer a question, but this public forum is meant to give readers a place to ask questions of editors (and others) about topics covered in the Wiki or to request topics for inclusion in the Wiki.
- Site Requests and Feedback is a public forum for discussion, suggestions, comments or requests related to the site design and functionality.
- Announcements: Site announcements, basically messages from admin on site down time, site updates, etc, will be cross posted on the Blog, the Announcements Forum and the email list, mmtwiki-l.
Further Reading
- The Public Domain Help pages from MediaWiki have been ported to MMT Wiki (See Help:Contents). Although they are not -- yet -- specific to MMT Wiki, they are good source of basic wiki info.
Suggested Projects
- Add, edit, organize MMT specific content. This is what MMT Wiki is made for and the highest priority.
- Edit the Help pages to make them MMT Wiki specific.
- Add projects to this list. Like most wiki pages, this page is meant to be edited.
Final Note
Please read the note at the bottom of each edit page:
